Whoopi Goldberg was born under the name of Caryn Elaine Johnson in Manhattan in the fall of 1955. She is the daughter of a clergyman named Robert James Johnson Jr. and his wife, Emma, a nurse and teacher. Goldberg is a high school dropout who made her career fame through talent, hard work and perseverance. She is well-known as a comedian, an actress, a singer and a spokeswoman as well as being a humanitarian and philanthropist. Goldberg strives to make lasting contributions in all areas of her career and her life.
Goldberg has been in over one hundred films, hundreds of television episodes and a least a half dozen stage plays. She is one of only an elite few performers who have received all four top entertainment industry awards, an Oscar, an Emmy, a Tony and a Grammy. The latter she received in1985 for her performance in Whoopi Goldberg: Direct from Broadway, making her the first African-American female artist to win the title. She received her first Academy Award nod for her first film role in Steven Spielberg’s movie The Color Purple. Her second nomination became her first win for her role opposite Patrick Swayze in the 1990 film Ghost.
Apparently, Whoopi Goldberg’s entertainment career has produced for her more than just several awards. She was reportedly paid $7,000,000 for her work on Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit and reportedly earns $2 million per year for her hosting spot on The View. In the 1990’s, Goldberg was said to be the highest paid actress of all time. Her income is considered to be in the range of $2 million – $5 million per year including her few endorsement deals and the residual income from her film and television work. She is currently considered to have a net worth of $45 million.
